A DESTINATION

Field & Green is a restaurant in the heart of Te Aro, Wellington, offering evocative food inspired by classic European dishes from France, Italy and Britain, interwoven with chef/owner Laura Greenfield’s Jewish heritage and celebrating the diaspora of cuisine.

Each dish tells a story of memory, of tradition, of the land, but also always evolving and learning from other cultures. For us that’s what it’s all about, sharing food sprinkled with history, traditions and culture, bound up in social relationships. We call it ‘European Soul Food’; food that feeds the soul that’s always prepared with heart.

Seating up to 50 people directly off our open kitchen, for a front row view of Laura’s culinary skills, you can take a seat at the chef’s bar. Seats six.

We are featured in Cuisine’s Top 100 since 2016, as a One Hat Restaurant. Find our most recent review here…

our place

262 Wakefield St has quite a history

Laura and Raechal opened Field & Green, a take on Laura’s surname Greenfield, in 2015 after relocating to New Zealand from London’s food and art scene.

Built in the early 1900's as a brass foundry, the site was to become a recording studio in the 50’s for the pioneering independent record label TANZA (To Assist New Zealand Artists). The label famously produced “Blue Smoke”, New Zealand’s first all-local hit. The premises then became a bar in various colourful guises before converting to food service.

By keeping the unique structure of the building and reusing many of the original materials, Field & Green retains the building’s history, modernised with Scandinavian lighting and Italian furniture. Mid-century Sheffield bone and silver cutlery passed down by Raechal's grandmother adds a personal touch.
